The President of the Board of Directors of Our Trade Union Mr. Narin spoke before the 17 December summit:
"Those who let us join them would win"

In his evaluation prior to the EU summit on 17 December, the President of the Board of Our Trade Union, Mr. Halit Narin stated that the Turkish Nation would bring enthusiasm, money and eagerness to the European Union, and he said; "Those who let us join them would win". In "Economy World" program that he joined in CNBC-e, Narin also pointed out that the alternative economies against the European Union should not be disregarded. He made a call saying "the way to receive tax is to support the taxpayers. Change the tax system".

Narin also said; "The European Union is a safe valve for our future. However, I believe it will be very useful for our government to consider making collaboration with the future's economic potential China and also with Russia in the event that there will be any mistakes in the EU. The European Union can only grow if they let us join them. Because we have 70 million enterprising people who have enthusiasm and hope for the future. We have so serious and smart and conscious people that not every country has. I believe that the future of an EU that wants to exclude these people will be too dark. But this world absolutely has an economic policy. We, as the Turkish Nation, would bring enthusiasm, money and eagerness to the European Union.

But we can bring this eagerness also to Russia and China who are in need of it. Because we have traits which they do not have there. With our skills, they can grow more rapidly, which will eventually make them stronger. And of course, we could benefit from their power in various ways. This is the choice of Europe, either they will grow with us, or we will grow with two countries. However in any case, we will grow as Turkey.

The Turkish Government will grow, the people will become stronger, their economic power will be enhanced, but those who will let us join them will make profit too".

Our amity argument with the EU will last 8-10 years

The President of the Board of Our Trade Union, Mr. Halit Narin, said that it would be easy to reach an agreement on every issue in the negotiation period with the EU other than agriculture issue. Saying "This is a question of time", Narin added "We will fight for 8-10 years, but we will fight to reach an agreement. We will fight to come to a certain point by making dialogues. In other words, this will be an amity fight".

Halit Narin answered the questions about the European Union in "Night View" program in CNN Turk. Referring also to the announcements given by our Trade Union to the European Newspapers to explain the economic power of Turkey, Narin said that in these announcements, they have revealed EU's benefits from Turkey using figures. Narin also said;" Using figures, we explained 400 million Europeans that partnership with Turkey will not bring them great expenses but make a contribution. We neutrally explained them the figures brought forth by the enterprising power we created. According to our study, our 70 million citizens have a purchasing power of about 12,000 USD. This purchasing power generates a figure of 850 billion USD and we share %60-70 of this figure with the Europeans. In terms of economy, we are the 14th biggest economy of the world according to the world statistics.

Everybody says that Turkey is small and weak. This is not true at all. We are such a country that has the best investment opportunities, and in democracy, we are far in advance of the Europeans. We explained line by line in our announcements, we said 'there is productivity', 'there is purchasing power', 'we have the greatest economy', and 'the best investment opportunity'. We said 'Turkey is a historical opportunity for the EU and likewise EU is a historical opportunity for Turkey'. By giving half page announcements in the most popular newspapers of all the European countries for three days, we created a system that addresses 400 million people. As our trade union, we are proud of this".

Narin also said; " We will take place within Europe. And our negotiation period will not take so long as they say. With our existing skills and persistence, we will end it in 6-8 years. But Europe will grow twice as much with us. If we can manage to create an economic power with Russia and China, I believe that Turkey will have a well-off future with high figures. Because we are so very enthusiastic 70 million people".

Transformation point on the way to the EU:

3rd October 2005

As a result of the EU Leaders Summit held on 17th December in Brussels, it was resolved that the negotiations with Turkey will be started on 3rd October 2005. Thus, Turkey left an historical turning point behind in its 45 years aspiration. The tough bargainings made by the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan with the leaders struck the summit. Following the ultimatum given by Erdogan concerning the Cyprus issue, a settlement was arranged, and Turkey left the diplomacy struggle it began with Europe after having received what it wanted.

Thus, an intense and difficult period has started for Turkey that will start the participation negotiations on 03rd October 2005 due to the resolution made at the EU summit which ended in Brussels. Considering the lessons learnt from the 5 expansion period that was previously encountered by the EU, it is understood that the more prepared the candidate country is for the negotiations, the faster and more smoothly the negotiation period will progress.
