Collective Bargaining Agreement Period Begins
in the Textile Industry
The first meeting for the negotiations on collective bargaining agreement for the new period, which will be implemented between our association on behalf of 108 firms and 133 businesses that are members and three separate labor unions representing approximately 34 thousand employees working at those places of business, was held with the Textile, Knitting and Apparel Workers' Union (TEKSIF) affiliated to TURK-IS at the headquarter of our Association on July 15, 2004.
The parties have agreed upon inclusion of the businesses, for which the Textile, Knitting and Apparel Workers' Union (TEKSIF) affiliated to TURK-IS labor union is to obtain definite authorization in the future, within the scope of the negotiations on behalf of the companies that are the member of our Association, whose authorization to conclude agreement with TEKSIF has become definite.
TEKSIF's committee presented their proposal to the authorities of our Union in written form at the meeting held in our Union relating to the 20th Collective Bargaining Agreement Period that will begin on September 09, 2004 in the textile industry.
In his speech he delivered at the meeting, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of our Association Mr. Halit Narin emphasized that the government should encourage the industrialists to make investments and pointed out that the imports from the Far East mostly affect the textile industry and that the uncontrolled imports discouraged investments. Stating that the inward processing regime exhausts the Turkish textile industry, Mr. Narin said, "Goods imported into Turkey under the inward processing regime have almost completely exhausted the Turkish textile industry for the last 3 years. Such things discourage us from employing new workers and making new investments." Also talking about the collective bargaining agreement negotiations, Mr. Narin stated that both parties should be more tolerant and that prolongation of negotiations would mean a loss for the workers. Narin completed his speech saying, 'The Turkish business life has always been peaceful and stable; this period will be the same as
well. However, our friends will fulfill their duties, and I will do the same. And, eventually, I hope that we will re-maintain a harmony suited to the Turkish economy, Turkish workers, Turkish nation, and to the order Ataturk desired to establish.
In his speech, the Chairman of TEKSIF Mr. Zeki Polat stated the import regime must be disciplined. Pointing out to the fact that textile products imported from China at highly cheap prices are sold in Turkey, Mr. Polat said, 'Turkey can feed not 70 million but 170 million people. Turkey's resources are even more than enough for its population. However, if you cannot calculate where US$ 360 billion has gone in 15 years, we experience its difficulties altogether, just as we do now."
Exports increase by 39.5 percent in June
According to the figures announced, exports increased by 39.5 percent and reached US$ 5.347 million in June compared with the same period in the last year. In the first half of 2004, exports reached US$ 39.367 million with an increase of 35.5 percent. The annual export volume has reached US$ 55.571 million with an increase of 33.2 percent. Thus, the export target set as US$ 55 billion by the beginning of the current year has been attained on annual basis by the end of the first half of the year.
